Selling
retail apparel like clothing, accessories and footwear, is a
multibillion-dollar industry. If a person is thinking of opening a clothing
store, an eye for fashion and a desire to sell their own designs is the start
that is needed. A person needs to analyse the retail industry to find out if
the potential for selling apparel, footwear and the goodies that go with it is
a moneymaking idea.
The Retail Industry Trends say that more than three hundred
billion dollars in revenue will be generated in 2009. The most profitable
segment was women’s clothing, accounting for 53 percent of the total revenue.
Selling apparel is a very seasonal business, with a majority of sales coming
during the holidays.
Retail
Industry Analysis
shows that a
number of large, well-branded retailers make up a big piece of the apparel Industry,
but many smaller businesses, such as boutiques and niche apparel stores, are
part of the market too. Larger apparel retailers have an advantage over small
shops since they get better pricing from suppliers because they buy large
quantities of apparel. This means their profit margin is greater and they can
offer better retail pricing to their customers. Smaller apparel retailers make
up for the high pricing they pay for wholesale retail apparel by selling
certain types and styles of clothing rather than offering everything to
everyone.

Another trend is the use of customer data to figure out what customers want. A way for small retailers to get this information is to use social media to acquire thisinformation from their customers.
Staying on top of the latest styles of clothing, footwear and accessories is key to attracting shoppers. Otherwise one ends up with too much inventory and the branding suffers. Another challenge is the abundance of retail apparel shops on the Internet since they may lure shoppers, causing one to lose revenue.
Apart from that, building and operating a physical store is costly. If money is a concern then this can be counteracted by solely selling apparel on the Internet thereby eliminating the need for a costly store and staff.
